Hi, as the team reviews your request. I wanted to let you know that it’s in Settings under About.

Yep! I'm aware — it's just really tucked away and inconvenient there.

Interesting, Messina. I've found that most people never use the menubar app. For a lot of people, it simply doesn't appear (macOS' UI often breaks when you have than >4 menu bar apps). But to be honest, TalkTastic just updates itself in the background now anyway. Checks every few hours. You really don't need check for updates.

I think the real solution here, by the way, is that we need to simply notify users when the app has been updated. You'd be surprised at how often that happens. We actually have the design for it already. We just haven't shipped it because we've been so busy with just basic speed and stability issues, stuff like the microphone, managing keyboard shortcuts, and dealing with a lot of issues downstream of low audio input levels.

I realize I'm probably an outlier but:

    1. 1.

I like to control when my apps update. Auto-updates scare me because I might depend on software to work a certain way (or I'm demoing the app to someone!) and then it's totally changed, which can be somewhat embarrassing.

    2. 2.

I do use the Menubar app for a couple things:

    1. a.

to make sure the app is running (sometimes apps crash quietly and I attempt to use it via a hotkey and it appears broken)

    2. b.

to quickly access settings or check for updates (given #1)

    3. c.

to review the settings (like Context etc)

    4. d.

I use Ice (previously Bartender) to manage my menubar overflow.

    1. 3.

I like to read release notes to understand what's being worked on so I can provide useful feedback.

    2. 4.

Bonus: I like how Granola tells me when I've already recently checked for an update.

Chris, I hear you on the auto-updating thing. I'll think about it, but I don't think we'll revert to manual updating until we're out of beta, if we even go that route. Honestly, we've been shipping a lot of big changes and bug fixes lately, so I think keeping auto-updates is important for us as beta software. But I'll keep it in mind. Maybe we could make it a setting? Btw, it's amazing how many things people want to control in the settings. Very interesting! Regarding the menu bar app, I'm really glad to hear you're using it. The main thing we designed it for is to review and change settings like Snapshot, whether you get a Transcript or Rewrite, that kind of thing. I'm glad you're actually using it because, like I said, a lot of people don't even know it's there! Release notes are now in the Release Notes and online here. Also, since you use Ice, please meet TalkTastic's new macOS engineer, –– Jordan Baird, creator of ICE. 🧊

Sup Jordan Baird! Congrats! Also, Matt Mireles — I'm supportive of auto-updates by default, since that makes the most sense for the majority of users. I'm just expressing my personal preference given my neuroticism. 🤪

Messina Thanks! As Matt said, I'll be taking on a central role in macOS development. I have lots of ideas for improvements, so if you like Ice, rest assured I'll be bringing that same level of care to TalkTastic.
